Milt's columns

After all of the Milt Dunnell tributes were read yesterday, fans of the late, great Toronto Star sports writer got a hankering for vintage Milt.

And vintage Milt they got online at the Toronto Star web site, where 10 classic Milt Dunnell columns spanning a few decades of his brilliant career are posted.

The columns, with Remembering Milt Dunnell headings, include gems about Frank Mahovlich, George Chuvalo, Wayne Gretzky, Northern Dancer etc. Priceless sports prose that should be required reading for budding sports writers.

(The Toronto Sun should be so generous online, making available columns from the files of Paul Rimstead, Lois Maxwell, Jim Hunt, Jerry Gladman, Bob MacDonald, Bob Pennington, McKenzie Porter, Ted Reeve etc.)

The Star also showed class in giving late obit writer, Warren Gerard, a byline credit yesterday for work he did on Milt's bio.

For the uninitiated, obit writers are often asked to prepare obituaries for aging celebrities, politicians etc. before they die, which are banked.

Warren, who died in November, obviously worked on Milt Dunnell's obit, or on Milt's 100th birthday special two years ago, and was given a byline yesterday for his work.

That is called r-e-s-p-e-c-t.
